The remembrance (Zikr) of Allah is an undeniable part of our Religion. It has been established from the Quran and the Sunnah, that the one who engages in this virtuous act will be successful. As it gains the pleasure of Allah and it gives a person tranquility of the heart, something which we all search for.
It is Allah himself, who has commanded his slaves to remember him: “O you who have believed, remember Allah with much remembrance. And exalt Him morning and afternoon.” (33:41-42) And he also says; “and remember Allah often that you may succeed.” (62:10) Similarly he states; “men and women who remember Allah much: Allah has prepared forgiveness for them and an immense reward” (33:35) In regard to those people he states: “Those who remember Allah, standing, sitting and lying on their sides” (3:191) As we can deduce from the aforementioned verses, Allah has instructed his slaves numerous times, in his glorious book to remember him.
Now, one might find himself asking; ‘Why has Allah emphasised his remembrance so much?’ The answer has been given by Allah: “And whoever turns away from My remembrance – indeed, he will have a depressed life, and We will gather him on the Day of Resurrection blind.” (20:124) This is a problem that many Muslims and Non-Muslims face, the find that they are depressed, many times they do not know the reason for this depression. They have all the worldly and materialistic things that many of us desire, yet they are unhappy…. Why?
The creator of the heart says: “Only in the remembrance of Allah can the heart find peace” (13:29) You cannot find contentment of the heart in any other thing, and you cannot allow the world to deceive you into believing so. Allah addresses the Believers: “O you who have believed, let not your wealth and your children divert you from remembrance of Allah . And whoever does that – then those are the losers.” (63:9) You will see that the people of this world, who have much wealth, who have everything that they could desire, they are extremely dissatisfied. Many of them abuse drugs and unfortunately many are driven to suicide. It is because they lack the remembrance of Allah, they lack any spiritual connection to their Lord.
In regards to the Prophet of Allah, it was said about him: “The Messenger of Allah used to remember Allah at every moment” (Muslim) This was the extent the Best of creation used to go to, his heart was always connected to Allah. His heart would not be neglectful to Allah’s remembrance. We can see his connection in this tradition: “The Prophet said to Ibn Masud, “Recite the Quran to me.” He asked, “Should I recite it to you when it was revealed to you?” He answered, “I love to hear it from someone other than me.” So he recited to him and his eyes overflowed with tears” (Bukhari) (Muslim) We can see from this incident the truth of Allah’s statement in the Quran: “Believers are only they whose hearts tremble with awe whenever God is mentioned, and whose faith is strengthened whenever His messages are conveyed unto them, and who in their Sustainer place their trust” (8:2) How many of us can say this about ourselves? Do we become fearful when the Quran is recited? Or do we become bored and let our minds wander? It is lamentable that the Muslims no longer ponder over the Book which changed human history.
When should we remember Allah? It is desirable to remember him after the two prayers, after which there are no optional prayers allowed, which are Fajr and Asr. After the Fajr prayer until the Sun rises and after the Asr prayer, when until Sun sets. Allah commands his remembrance at these two times specifically in the day: “and glorify Him in the morning and evening” (33:2), “Remember the Name of you Lord in the morning and evening,” (76:25), “glorify him in the evening and after dawn,” (3:41) So at these two times, we should make sure to remember Allah, recite Quran, and sit in the gatherings where His name is mentioned.
We should make it a point in our lives to attend those gathering, wherein, the remembrance of Allah is taking place. Allah’s Messenger stated: “When any group of men remember Allah, angels surround them and mercy covers them, tranquility descends upon them, and Allah mentions them to those who are with Him.” (Muslim) What an honour! That the mere creation is mentioned by the Creator. The Messenger of Allah has similarly stated: “Those who are admitted into paradise will not remorse over anything of this world, except over the times in which the Zikr of Allah was not utilised” (Bukhari) So we should busy ourselves in the remembrance of Allah; so that our life in the Hereafter is beautified. Before our lives expire and we meet our Lord; let us meet him with an abundant amount of remembrance in our records.
May Allah give us the ability to remember him abundantly. May he forgive us for those times we were neglectful of his remembrance. May he give us contentment of the heart. Ameen.
