‘It’s just banter’ no it’s slander!

SlanderOne serious sin which is rampant in this day and age is undoubtedly slander. The Muslims will also perpetrate this sin with little or no regard for the consequences in the Hereafter. Believers will slander anyone, their intimate friends, their close family members, the learned scholars, the beloved servants of Allah, even Prophets!

Allah mentions in the Qur’an about slander: “When you passed on with your tongues and uttered with your mouths that about which you had no knowledge. You took it lightly while it was a very serious offence in the sight of Allah.” (24:15) It seems as though many of us also take slander lightly, passing it off as mere horseplay or justifying it as ‘Banter’.  The only ones who we try to fool are our own selves as this excuse will not save us on the Day of Judgement.

Even though the Prophet has said when he was asked: “Who is the most excellent among the Muslims?” He said, “One from whose tongue and hands the other Muslims are secure.”(Bukhari)  Who can honestly admit to following this Prophetic tradition? We do not have to look far, how many times have we hurt our brother or sister with our tongue? We do it so casually, as though the fear of Allah has completely left our hearts. This is not the manner in which a believer conducts himself.

Online this can be observed; people dedicate so many characters, they will edit pictures, they will concoct fanciful stories, they will invite others to join in. Why? Solely to belittle and slander their fellow Muslim! So that for a few moments they get some recognition, they become known, they are celebrated… Know that on the Day of Judgement the very same people who called you ‘funny’ or ‘creative’ or a ‘savage’ will be cursing you and you will be cursing them. They will want your deeds and that very same person you wronged will be compensated, no soul shall be spared.

Keep this verse in mind the next time you wish to belittle your brother: “Every soul will taste death, and you will only be given your [full] compensation on the Day of Resurrection. So he who is drawn away from the Fire and admitted to Paradise has attained [his desire]. And what is the life of this world except the enjoyment of delusion.” (3:185) You may not regret that post now, but a day will come very soon wherein you will wish you had never written it, so repent and ask for forgiveness from your brother or sister before it is too late.

As for those people who slander and backbite behind closed doors, be it on group chats or private messages; your Lord has said: “Or do they think that We hear not their secrets and their private conversations? Yes, [We do], and Our messengers are with them recording.” (43:80)  You too will not be spared. Just because your brother or sister does not hear the abuse and stories you fabricate; then attribute to him, do not think the Lord of your brother or sister does not hear.

If by chance you hear this slander then do not believe it and defend the honour of your brother or sister: “And why, when you heard it, did you not say, “It is not for us to speak of this. Exalted are You, [O Allah ]; this is a great slander?”  (24:16) It does not befit a believing man or woman that they spread falsehood about their believing sibling. If you see oppression then stop it. Never be scared to assist the truth, Allah will reward you in the Hereafter.

Allah save us from falling in this sin, he keep slander far away from us and our family members. May he forgive our shortcomings and give us Paradise. Ameen.
